Steve Hower - Operations Director at Heart to Heart
Steve Hower, Operations Director with Heart to Heart, gave us a fantastic overview of this locally founded international service group. They run on less than 2% admin overhead, earning them a spot amongst the most efficient charitable groups. The work they do is fantastic, and they offer service groups a chance to contribute in a wide variety of ways.

John Bitinis with Narconon
Narconon is a group that helps people to deal with drug addiction.
John Bitinis and Amanda O’Connor came by to educate us on the nature of physical addictions, why they are so persistent, and what has to happen to successfully overcome them. They have a unique program – if you or someone you care for has an addiction problem it’s worth looking into.

Chris Hope - The Dictionary Project
Chris Hope and some friends started the dictionary project some 10 years back. Now, with the help of Kiwanis and other service organizations 3rd graders at every elementary school can receive their very own dictionary, both public and private, in 8 counties, for a total of over 800 schools! Kiwanis Awards $5000 Grant to Shawnee Community Services
On 10/18/11 the Kiwanis International Foundation awarded Shawnee Community services a grant for $5000 which was presented by the Shawnee Kiwanis. In the picture are Evelyn Van Kempse President of Shawnee community services with Jay Larue President and Kevin Hennessy past president. The Money will be used to help feed, clothe and offer everyday needs for families in the Johnson county area. Shawnee Community Services has been doing charitable work at 11110 W. 67th Street in Shawnee, Kansas for the past 20 years. Shawnee Community Services is a non-governmental organization whose primary support comes from the resale of donated goods along with cash donations from local service clubs, churches, businesses and other organizations. It operates with three full time paid staff plus a legion of volunteers that support the organization in many and various ways. It is a highly effective organization directly delivering services to the less fortunate in a most cost effective and timely basis. Shawnee Community.

Kiwanis International provide nearly 6 million hours of community service and donate more than 100 million to causes benefiting children. Karen Boyed - Johnson County Christmas Bureau
Today’s lunch was fun, as one of our favorite people joined us. Karen Boyd, representing The Johnson County Christmas Bureau brought us up to date on this year’s program. Thanks for all your hard work Karen!

El Presidente - Jay LaRue
Our new esteemed, honorable, venerable, (well you get the idea) President – Jay LaRue, addressed the group and shared his vision for the future of our club. While aggressive, it’s certainly a doable agenda for a group of people who really want to make a difference in our community!
